Is Orrin senile?>Dems and Hatch make cozy match

Has Orrin Hatch become the Democrats’ favorite Republican?

Orrin G. Hatch has been keeping some strange company lately.

You can find Hatch standing with Democratic Sens. Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, advocating for the children of illegal immigrants.

And don’t forget this: One of Hatch’s Senate buddies is the Democratic icon Edward M. Kennedy.

So what has happened to this conservative Republican from Utah?

Has he gone soft after 30 years in the Senate?

Has Hatch, of all people, become the Democrats’ favorite Republican?

Hatch came of age in a different era than most of his hyperpartisan brethren. His family lost its home during the Great Depression, and his father built the new one from charred scrap wood in the hills above Pittsburgh.

As a youngster, the senator tended the chicken coop and sold eggs. He once held a union card and was a registered Democrat during law school.

A devout Mormon, he did missionary work for himself and his brother, who was killed in World War II.

Such personal history provides some longer-term perspective in the Senate and has led him to join Democrats in backing programs like the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, or DREAM, Act, designed to help children of illegal immigrants gain permanent residency status.
