Chris, I will not get into a pointless argument with you. I will close my discussion on this matter with the following questions/statements.

1. Are you stating that cable companies are deploying HFC? If so, when do you expect that a significant number of consumers will be wired to make it finacially viable for the companies.
2. You state that "telcos" are moving into the "cable industry". I assume you mean they want to offer the same services as cable, and you would be right. However, (using my PacBell example) telcos will do it with technology that they can deploy in the next 1-3 years. PacBell has stated that they are "replacing" the current copper plant with ANS (Advanced Network Services) which is HFC.
3. HFC and FTC = same thing
4. You state "but the majority of broadband consumer products may be delivery through the cable system", I disagree, they WILL be delivered by cable (more specifically HFC)! But not anytime soon.
5. You state "Cable looks to be more of a problem now for ADSL". If cable (and we are not talking about having to use a modem and a POTS line for the upstream signal) can reach half the potenial ADSL customers I might agree with you. But you know cable dosen't even come close.

Summary

ADSL will have its day in the near term. Those companies that win will make truckloads of money. Someday this nation will have its Information Super Highway where bandwith is "no problemo", with HFC, VDSL, etc. supplying it in the long run. But for now in those infamous words of Rodney King, "can't we just all get along"!
