Most retail brokers have additional umbrella coverage that goes far beyond the 100K SIPC insures. Ameritrade, for example, insures accounts up to 150 Million with "excess" insurance (Lloyds of London I believe). Of course if the whole world goes up in smoke, then the insurance probably won't be any good but in that case, neither will anything else. best... LIG
