welfare states have made it impossible to fund a military Many people seem to have forgotten that the reason that governments were formed centuries ago is still the primary purpose of a legitimate government. That primary purpose for government is to protect the lives of its citizens from violence from domestic criminals and foreign enemies. No other function of government comes close in priority to that function. Many if not most people, especially welfare state types, seem to think the primary function of government is to satisfy their wants (e.g. write checks). That is a very dangerous trend in our attitudes toward government.
