Oh M,
China refused to allow people in China to make their own decisions on whether to ingest opium or not. The British refused to allow the Chinese to act as sovereign nation. The Chinese saw a huge social cost which they, not the British had to bear and took steps to end it. ie profits to British, cost to Chinese... The British with no regards for human life (at least non British life) did indeed coerce and bully the Chinese into allowing the opium trade to continue. The British goal was all about money with no regard for the consequences to human life. The original I'm alright Union Jack crowd.. OK, so the British likely did not really consider the Chinese to be quite human or at least less so than themselves..

Look at Hong Kong today compared with other parts of China.
I did recently. Shanghai is quite impressive for one.
I would be very surprised if the Chinese do not encourage a greater role eventually for it over Hong Kong with HK eventually being supplanted... For now the business infrastructure, environment and reputation of Hong Kong serve a need..

People are everywhere nothing more than state serfs
State serfs, corporate serfs... victims of press gangs.. debtors prisons, bond slaves... what has changed ? You bemoan one of the universal constants of human civilisation as if it is a regression while in fact, it just is, was, and likely always will be...

Mere chattel cattle to be exploited and repressed by those who get themselves into power.
LOL.. when exactly and under which system has this not been so ? There are always the two sides... Under some systems the ratio is simply less extreme..

such as Dr Ron Paul Ah yes... from the be careful what you wish for department.. He sounds OK in theory... but methinks the reality of human behaviour is left out of his equation... I would like him to get in... I think it would be a spectacular surprise and ultimately a magnificent letdown...
