Ronald Reagan then Karl Rove - they demonized everyone who wasn't on their side of the aisle, paradoxically got elected to run the government by saying government was always an evil problem, then turned the machinery and budget of that government to serve their own constituency and their own agenda and tried to ram that package down the throat of the US political system. The system rebelled and spit them back out; so the "permanent Republican majority" is now a 30% minority cause that lost the Congress in 2006 and should lose the White House in 2008. The Reagan-Rove themes worked in presidential elections but did little to achieve lasting governance.
