Let's put this rumor to rest that Adobe might want to buy Macromedia.

One simple reason I would give against this notion is that John Warnock, Adobe CEO, doesn't like Macromedia and doesn't like its core product, Director. But let's get even more detailed here.

A while back, Adobe acquired Aldus, which at the time had FreeHand. Because of the license agreement that Altsys (original developer of FreeHand) had with Aldus, Adobe basically had to jettison FreeHand, which was picked up by Macromedia. Because of the agreement done in that acquisition of Aldus by Adobe, Adobe would again have to jettison FreeHand.

It's unlikely that Adobe is interested in the Macromedia product Authorware.

Macromedia has now announced its own HTML editor, Dreamweaver, which will compete, to some extent anyway, with Adobe's PageMill.

And last but not least, Adobe already has a video editor, Premiere, and Macromedia has publicly discussed a competitor product they're working on, code-named Keygrip. Randy Ubillos, the principal programmer responsible for the original version of Premiere, bailed out of Adobe and went to Macromedia and is the principal developer behind Keygrip. Overlap of products and bring back the bad boy who bailed?.... I think not.

So what we've got here is about as bad a fit of products to merge together as I've ever seen, and people who probably don't like each other too much.

Does anyone still think that Adobe would be interested in buying Macromedia? Where do these stupid rumors come from??
