Intel Investors - Re: Intel, Compaq, Corollary & Deschutes

Intel's purchase of Corollary is coming into better focus - notice the mention of the K6+ - whoops, excuse me - I meant Deschutes - in Compaq's new product plans., along with the Slot 2 interface.

Company Press Release

Corollary and Compaq Announce Technology Exchange
Agreement for Breakthrough Eight-Processor Design

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1997--

Profusion Architecture Emerges as Industry-Standard for

Highly Scalable Multiprocessing

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ), the world's leading server vendor, and Corollary, Inc., the Irvine, California-based industry leader in symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) architecture and chipsets, today announced a technology exchange agreement to advance the development of a standards-based eight processor design. Under the terms of the agreement, Corollary's Profusion multi-processing architecture and Compaq's I/O technology will be deployed together to enhance the SMP capabilities of Intel Deschutes Slot 2(a) processors. In addition, Corollary has licensed Compaq's PCI Hot Plug technology to increase levels of system availability and enable the on-line serviceability required for mission-critical computing
today. Customers will benefit from this technology through less downtime and reduced maintenance costs.

This development further establishes Corollary's Profusion architecture as the industry-standard for highly scalable multiprocessing. Flexible, cost-effective industry-standard servers have demonstrated their ability to compete with comparable, yet more expensive, RISC-based systems. With the introduction of Profusion
architecture to the market (in the second half of 1998) standards-based servers will bring the advantages of increased flexibility and price/performance to new customers at the highest reaches of enterprise computing.

''Corollary has been driving the development of the eight-CPU multiprocessing market for several years and we've been gratified to see the tremendous growth as new, scalable operating systems have evolved from Microsoft and SCO. Now, the combination of Corollary's Profusion architecture and Compaq's I/O and PCI Hot Plug technologies further establishes Intel-based multiprocessing as the new standard for enterprise computing,'' said George White, President, Corollary, Inc. ''Compaq's advanced I/O and PCI Hot Plug
technologies add additional I/O performance capabilities and increased availability to these industry standards based platforms.''

''Many of our enterprise customers want the eight-way processor technology available to them in anticipation of growing application demands, but they are waiting for the introduction of a future
standards-based architecture that will give them greater processing power and scalability than that which is currently available. The ProLiant 7000 shipping today is upgradable to an eight-way architecture. This important scalability feature provides customers the added investment protection they are looking for to
meet their evolving needs,'' said Mike Perez, Vice President, Server Products Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. ''Corollary has the superior, proven technology and ability to partner effectively with other OEMs that are important to bringing this breakthrough standards-based architecture to a much broader market.''

Operating System Support

Corollary and Compaq are working closely with leading operating system vendors to ensure that customers
will see tremendous scalability benefits from the new architecture. Two of the leading vendors of operating
systems with eight-way multiprocessing support for the Intel platform are Microsoft and SCO.

''With the recent release of Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition 4.0 and its extended SMP support, our
customers will increasingly use eight-processor servers as cost-effective platforms for their largest
server-based applications,'' said Rich Tong, Vice President, Personal and Business Systems Group,
Microsoft Corporation. ''Microsoft is pleased that Corollary and Compaq are working together to create
standards-based eight-processor servers that deliver higher scalability and enhanced reliability.''

''SCO has worked with Corollary since 1989, when we launched the first operating system for
multiprocessor systems based on Intel hardware,'' said Ray Anderson, Senior Vice President of SCO's
Product Division. ''Our UNIX systems were designed to run servers containing as many as 32 processors.
Today, many companies already run their business-critical applications on multiprocessor Compaq servers
with SCO OpenServer or SCO UnixWare operating systems. These new eight-processor servers are the
next logical step, and SCO stands ready to support them now.''

Compaq and Corollary Continue Longstanding Relationship

Compaq and Corollary have been working jointly on eight-way chipset technology for more than a year.
Compaq concentrated its efforts on developing high performance I/O bridge technology and driving
improvements to overall I/O functionality, while Corollary set industry trends through its development of the
high-performance Profusion memory architecture. The Compaq and Corollary relationship dates back to the
late 1980's when the two companies jointly developed multiprocessing capability for Compaq Systempro
customers. Compaq and Corollary have a long history of advancing standards-based Intel architecture
microprocessing platforms and jointly participate in several special interest groups and other significant
industry initiatives.
