I'm reading an excellent book now, "Beyond Einstein". More than anything, it shows how at sea physicists are today, in the realm of the unimaginably large and the unimaginably small as well. Where we live, Newton and Einstein will serve - except for explaining gravity. In the very small, string theory seems to be in favor in place of accepting a gigantic ever-expanding zoo of unseeable particles, although it seems largely untestable by experimental physics as of yet. In the realm of the seemingly infinitely huge, dark matter is used to explain what they see, A universe that is accelerating in certain directions away from us, although no one has ever seen dark matter.
