I have a cousin whose poodle is having digestive problems. My cousin is on SSI and Medicaid and just received a $7K grant to replace her windows and her kitchen. She cannot afford the treatment the vet recommended.

Vets offer something like what the Business Week article describes. They have special credit cards to finance pet care but she didn't want to go that route. So I was trying to help by searching the internet for organizations that help with vet care. Most of the organizations I identified recommend the credit cards. None would pay for her poodle.

My cousin's POV is that, since having pets is healthy for people, someone should pay for her pet's treatment just as they pay for her own.

Just a little anecdote to illustrate the slippery slope of the welfare mind set...
