My dad wrote and sells a non-fiction book and has had good results placing it in independent stores, they get 60% of the sales price which they like. Fiction is probably more difficult but you could try independent book stores, used book stores, that sort of thing. You would probably have to give them quite a bit of the gross, and you have to drive around to all the stores once a month to re-stock and collect your cut. He had cardboard book stands and marketing materials printed which he sets up in the stores.
