The malls are filled with people buying lightly, being very cautious. I went to a mall on Friday and saw store after fancy store empty except for the ones selling food. People will still eat, but will they not buy non-essentiual retail priced goods. I saw lots of 50% off signs and still no one in those stores. That was on Black Friday supposedly the top day of the year for retail sales.

When your home equity drops 20%, your stocks drop 15% and your job is in jeopardy with soaring energy, education and health care costs, why waste money buying non-essentials goods? That is what's going on now. People will still buy ultra discounted goods, but who wants to pay retail for anything anymore? Even the rich class Bush has taken care of so well are hedging now about that new yacht or private jet.
