Zinc

An analysis of studies conducted on the efficacy of zinc in treating the common cold found that a therapeutic benefit for zinc lozenges has not been established. The analysis, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases in September 2007, examined studies on the therapeutic use of zinc that were published between 1966 and 2006. Of the 105 studies, only 14 of the studies examining zinc therapy for the common cold were found to have followed basic procedures for ensuring scientific validity. That is, they were randomized, meaning there was no bias in determining which subjects underwent zinc therapy and which didn't; and they were placebo-controlled, meaning the group of subjects receiving zinc therapy were compared to a control group that was administered a therapy that didn't actually contain any active ingredients. These studies were further evaluated on various criteria to determine which had sufficiently eliminated potential bias, inaccurate measurement or inadequate measurement in their procedures. Of these four, three found no therapeutic effect from zinc lozenge or nasal spray. One of these four well-designed studies reported a positive effect of zinc nasal gel on treating the common cold. However, the analysis noted that permanent anosmia - or loss of one's sense of smell - has also been linked to the use of intranasal zinc therapy.
