There was both a novel and a non-fiction about ten years ago that went into the deal we cut Hirohito. MacArthur was very much complicit in it. He knew he could run Japan if he kept him on the throne. Hirohito was THE major war criminal of Japan. But that was quashed

That is very apparent from the documents. It was official US policy from the highest levels to retain the Emperor. It was feared that Japan would be ungovernable if we removed the Throne, and that removing the Emperor would invite a Communist takeover. It is very clear that as early as spring 1945 we were already in the Cold War.

SCAP, which as military government in Japan was responsible for the prosecution of war criminals, directly interfered in the testimony of accused war criminals to avoid any mention of the Emperor.
