Contrast that with Germany, where there was no government, and the occupation took a decade and cost immeasurably more in treasure.

The occupation of Germany ended after the Berlin wall came down in 1989. Only then were the Soviet, British, French and American zones (established after WWII) completely dismantled, Including the final zone of occupation which was greater Berlin.

In 1980, during my last "official" trip to Berlin, we still had some 250,000 American troops in Germany.

When that wall came down and the Soviets began withdrawing from Berlin and East Germany, it was replaced with Yankee Go Home signs.
