I though the half point was added to the absolute value of the spread.

In other words +5 becomes +5.5, -5 becomes -5.5.

My main point is just that I thought that was how things where set up (not that anyone used the term "absolute value" but that was how it worked), but also if you do it that way it doesn't matter how you express the spread.

If you add +.5 to the positive or negative integer than if you express it as a positive the team that was favored by 5 now has to win by 6 points (+5 becoming +5.5), while if you express it as a negative the team favored by 5 points now only has to win by 5 (-5 becomes -4.5).
