Management systems can help reduce cost of mobile backhaul
By Dawn Bushaus | Telephonyonline.com

With mobile traffic increasing at a dizzying pace, mobile network operators are spending a fortune on backhaul transport. Last year alone, mobile operators worldwide paid wireline service providers a total of $19.5 billion for backhaul services, according to Infonetics Research. That figure is expected to increase steadily over the next few years. So what's the key to reducing backhaul costs? Industry experts say it's using operations support systems to improve management of backhaul facilities.

"With the explosion of mobility services including data services, mobile backhaul is becoming quite a burden in terms of the mobile operator's balance sheet," says Pablo Martinez, director of product marketing at Telcordia. "In some cases, over 50 percent of the carrier's capex and over 10 percent of their opex is going to the backhaul portion of the network."
