Re: I don’t have any strong opinions about elections in Pakistan. I do. It's pretty much the same story all over. Autocrats need to keep the illusion of an external threat alive so they can maintain their hold on power. This becomes an actual threat because the very Autocracy stokes insurgencies. And, the longer Democratic aspirations of the people are resisted (think: Iran for the archetypal example) the more success the most extreme elements opposing the government begin to have... as the population loses faith in the ability of the more 'milk-toast' elements of the opposition to successfully oppose the Autocrat and his cronies.
