Olicom Approves NHC's J-Link Fiber Extender for Use with Crossfire Token Ring Switch

October 8, 1997 5:02 PM EDT
NHC Communications Inc. (NHC), a leading manufacturer of connectivity and switching solutions, has announced Olicom's approval of the TokenEase J-Link Fiber Extender.

The J-Link provides a versatile and cost-effective solution for linking switch ports to servers, switch ports to LAN segments, fiber-to-the-desk solutions. Providing fiber connectivity for both 802.5 Classic Token Ring and 802.5JDTR Token Ring, the TokenEase J-Link converts copper media to multimode fiber cable, allowing Token Ring equipment to be interconnected up to 2km via fiber.

Specifically designed for switch applications, the TokenEase J-Link utilizes 802.5J keying sequences for maximum interoperability and can either source or sink phantom current. The versatile J-Link is configurable to afford single or dual redundant connections between any combination of Token Ring products, including switches, servers, hubs, MAUs, NICs, and bridges.

"The TokenEase J-Link is currently the most versatile Token Ring fiber extender on the market," stated Reg Armitage, sales and marketing director at NHC Communications. "By applying the J-Link transceiver to extend their existing copper links, users benefit from extended distances, greater security, higher fault tolerance, and resilience."

"The proliferation of client/server architectures and new bandwidth-hungry applications are combining to move more data from the LAN segments onto the backbone," added Olicom's Stig Nelson. "Token Ring switches and fiber cable offer a new way for network administrators to interconnect multiple Token Ring segments."

The TokenEase J-Link allows fiber links up to 2km in length to operate at 4 or 16Mbps. Designed for easy installation, the J-Link features an accessible switch, allowing the unit to be easily configured to each customer's application. The J-Link Dual implements a dual redundant fiber link between a server and switch port for mission critical applications.

An optional 1U rack mounts up to four J-Links, and a 3U rack is available for mounting up to 14 J-Links in a single rack. The J-Link single is priced at $595, and the J-Link Dual is $895.
