Look at my post carefully. If you see something that resembles "racial discrimination stopped with slavery" let me know.
As for discrimination. Discrimination is a rather broad word, but here I'll limited it to racial discrimination.
In personal relationships, people have a natural right to discriminate against others. If you won't act friendly to people of another race maybe your a jerk, but you have a right to be a jerk in that way. It can reasonable be argued that you also have purely private interactions that aren't "personal relationships" (defined for the purposes of this post as social interactions, friendships, dating, and such) you still have such a right, but since I doubt you would agree for the sake of argument I'll assume that there is no such right. That's its wrong for A not to sell to or buy from B, because of B's race, and that its a wrong that rightfully deserves some government intervention to punish, prevent, and/or compensate for.
Even starting with that assumption, it doesn't make a lot of sense that if A discriminates against B, that you should then favor C (who happens to have the same skin color as B) over D (who happens to have the same skin color as A). You might say "well D has also been discriminated against. Well perhaps, but unless C unjust discriminated against D (or at least someone) why punish C? |
