There is incredible stonework at some of those ruins.

Exquisite stonework at Tambo Machay, a small ruin outside Cuzco.

There are many theories on how the Incas managed such fine stonework: in structures such as Sacsayhuaman, the stone blocks can be hundreds of tonnes, yet they're so finely carved it can be difficult to slide a knife between them. At the end of the day, nobody really knows.
