Hard to say this early out.

But I *do know* that the 'largest political identification' current in today's America (as it has been for well over a decade now) is "Independent".

NOT Democrat or Republican.

Independent seems to be the only one that has consistently grown ever larger in recent years --- while Party identification for the other two has been declining.

(That would argue to me that the 'divide' is not so stark and binary as you seem to be suggesting. Unless, perhaps, the growing numbers in the middle are pushing the shrinking Party bases of both Dem and Rep out to the more extreme positions... and that accounts for your perception of a stark division between the two.)
