It's showtime, folks!!! Robert Dillon speculates on what might happen...

AGIA deadline

Applications on the natural gas pipeline are due tomorrow at 5 p.m. Alaska Standard Time. Last time I spoke with Resources Commissioner Tom Irwin, he seemed confident the state would receive more than one viable proposal.

I suspect we'll see applications for an LNG project and a traditional gas line to Alberta. And I'm not counting proposals for an instate spur line.

Companies that have expressed an interest in the pipeline in the past include MidAmerican, TransCanada and BG Group.

TransCanada reportedly took a proposal to its board yesterday, but I haven't heard how the presentation went.

I suspect BG Group will buy out the Port Authority's permits and pursue an LNG line to Valdez. The Port Authority would then focus on an instate spur line.

The Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority has said it would submit a spur line application as well.

Enbridge has said it won't bid without participation from at least one of the majors, which isn't happening at the moment.

A wild card I previously reported on, but haven't checked back with in awhile is El Paso.

A rumor I've ignored for awhile but that keeps rearing its head is that MidAmerican is considering buying BP's gas assets on the North Slope. I'm not sure how much sense this makes, but I can't find anyone to deny it, which isn't the same as having it confirmed. Buying anything more than BP's gas rights could be folly considering the condition of North Slope infrastructure. (Chuck Hamel says he's got prove that the situation is worse than previously thought.)

A variation of the same rumor has Shell in talks with BP over its gas holdings.

Tomorrow night the Palin administration will tell us which of these companies are interested. Beyond that, we'll have to wait until the administration can vet the applications -- which is bound to take at least a month.
