TOKYO, Nov 30, 2007 (Thomson Financial via COMTEX) -- FJTSY | charts | news | PowerRating -- Japanese electronics maker Fujitsu Ltd plans to join forces with Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs to develop a chip that will be the core technology of the next generation of mobile broadband communications, the Nikkei reported on Friday without citing sources.

This chip will enable personal computers, cellular phones and other digital devices to send and receive data wirelessly at 70 megabits per second (mbps), which is fast enough to stream high-quality video images even when users are on the move, the business daily said.

Services based on this mobile broadband communications technology, WiMax, are scheduled to start in Japan in 2009 or later, it said.

Fujitsu and the Ministry of Economic Affairs also plan to set up a joint venture research facility in Taiwan at a cost of several billion yen to develop a WiMax chip tailored to the needs of Taiwanese electronics firms, the report said.
