Stacy Keach played Hemingway in a TV movie quite some time ago that depicted how that might have happened. It showed Hemingway being unable to cope with the loss of his creative writing powers.

Keach was quite effective playing Hemingway, as I recall. I also remember him in the Mike Hammer series. I remember Mickey Spillane saying something like "I don't care who plays Mike Hammer, but he has to carry a .45 or it's no deal."
