Depressions are caused by lack of liquidity resulting in a cascade of "sell to whom?". The one thing we do know from history is that turning OFF the spigots leads to disaster. Bernanke, an economic historian who specialized in depression history and theory, is putting his theoretical understanding to the test. (We also know that opening the spigots wide open leads to hyperinflation, not deflation.)
