It's no wonder that we in the West can't stand the Muslim religion: U.K. Officials Visit Teacher in Sudan Jail as Protests Erupt 2007-11-30 08:41 (New York)
By Karl Maier Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. embassy officials today visited the British teacher convicted by a Sudanese court of insulting Islam as protesters took to the streets of Khartoum calling for her death, an embassy spokesman said. Gillian Gibbons, 54, was sentenced yesterday to serve 15 days from the day of her arrest on Nov. 25 and then she will be expelled. British officials are still negotiating with the Sudanese government to seek her release, embassy spokesman Omar Daair said in a telephone interview from Khartoum. ``Deputy Ambassador Hugh Evans visited her and she was fine,'' Daair said, refraining from specifying where she is being held. ``We understand there were about 600 people involved in the demonstration.'' Gibbons allowed her class of 6- and 7-year-old children to name a teddy bear used in a school project in September. Muhammad, the name of Islam's prophet, was the most popular choice. The pupils were studying animals and their habitats. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband held a 45-minute meeting with the Sudanese ambassador to London, Omer Siddiq, after the verdict was announced, the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office said yesterday in an e-mailed statement. Miliband earlier called for the teacher's release, saying the incident was an ``innocent misunderstanding.''
