The entire growth mantra assumes limitless space in which to grow IN. Don't most of our problems today stem from too many people chasing too few resources and wealth? The Earth isn't an infinite space.

Either we leave the planet, or change the mantra. Or both.

Well the discussion was economic not population growth... but you do have a point. The "mantra" is constant growth... do we really need it? Would people be happier with a nice comfortable lifestyle and a lot less stress?
