I think you're using far too broad a brush. If some society established a pretty cool regime, you might never hear about it, everyone having a good time and all that. When we were in Prague this summer, we went to the Jewish Cemetery (largest in Eastern Europe) Overheard a tour group leader explaining how everyone got along extremely well until the Catholic Church came in about 1200 or so.
