Van de Velde calls for more aggressive probe of Jovin's death

New Haven (AP) _ A man who was named a suspect in the 1998 killing of Yale University student Suzanne Jovin is one of two people calling on state authorities to be more aggressive in investigating the case.

James Van de Velde is the only person New Haven police have publicly named as a suspect in the multiple stabbing of the 21-year-old Jovin, but he has not been charged with any crime. He was a lecturer at Yale and Jovin's senior thesis adviser at the time of her death.

Van de Velde says he was wrongly named a suspect and his academic career has been ruined. The New Haven Register reports that he and journalist Donald Connery are urging the state's Cold Case Unit to be more active in its efforts to solve the crime.

Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane, who oversees the Cold Case Unit, says investigators are doing their best to find out who killed Jovin.

But Van de Velde and Connery say the Cold Case Unit has done a poor job of reaching out to the public for leads. They say the unit's Web site makes no mention of the Jovin case on its list of open cases and does not note the $150,000 reward for information that helps solve the killing.
