Years and years ago there was an old trapper/prospector along the Clearwater River near the same river trail the Voyageurs traveled who found a quartz vein.

He read or saw in a movie if you find a quartz vein you're sure to find gold. He followed his vein 5-7 feet down in granite 3-4 feet across over a distance a hundred feet long using hand tools. He performed a Herculean task in a very remote place.

For lack of something better to do we staked several thousand acres around his diggings and cleaned out his trench using a wajax pump and fire hose. After cleaning out the trench I suggested he might have been crazy because there was nothing visible in the vein or wall rock. The lab confirmed my suggestion as there was not even 10ppb Au.

That was the last jaunt I ever took on a story about gold being in them thar hills. I'd do it again though.

The prospector died in that trench we cleaned out and was eaten by his sled dogs.
