I remember on a fur prospecting trip back about 1957 we found a vein of quartz and took some samples. Somebody saw one of those samples on my friend's dad's desk and had it assayed. It had some silver in it, about $.035 a ton's worth.

We made more money trapping.

Part of my trapline was taken out by a molybdenum mine. I watched them dig the first discovery hole. I could look down this shaft and see two miners digging. The mine owner stayed on top and brought up the buckets on a hoist.

Mining and prospectors undergo so much work it's a wonder any of them could make a nickel. Two summers ago we visited the discovery pit of a miner near the Lolo Trail. Trees are growing up in it now, but you could see it was back breaking work.

I guess it's the big strike that keeps them going.
