Well in the end it looks like the net energy return with corn ethanol is about 0.25 watts per square meter of ground. If you take sugar cane in Brazil it's almost 1 watt per square meter of ground.

Here is where PV's really shine. 20 watts plus per square meter of ground. (if you used Sunpowers panel it would be about 30 watts per square meter of ground)

And the big kahuna..... drum roll please...

Solar thermal (Asura for example) at minimum at least twice what PV can do.

These are per hour rates over a years time.
