I don't know. A few years later Eugene McCarthy ran and not a word was said about his religion. And he was a much more devout Catholic than Kennedy. Almost became a priest.

And as I mentioned before, George Romney's Mormonism was never a factor in his campaign (although, I wonder if his "I was brainwashed" remark had a special resonance coming from a Mormon).
