Radio Free Asia Incorporates Skype into Its Operation
Brian Solomon, TMCnet Web Editor

In the broadcasting industry, Skype (News - Alert) has become a very important asset for keeping reporters in touch, as well as for delivering voice reports and providing effective technical support.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) a private, nonprofit corporation broadcasting news and information in nine native Asian languages to listeners who do not have access to full and free news media, recently incorporated Skype into its operation. They had been using Net2Phone for low cost voice communication, but ownership changes at Net2Phone led them to search for a new service.

The original reason for using Skype was its ability to manage accounting and billing related to VoIP service. Many of their reporters were already using Skype on a personal basis; now they could use it to manage all voice communications.

The main goal was originally the reduction of voice communications costs. Call recording for interviews has also become a useful feature. As their users get more accustomed to Skype, RFA is expanding its use to include conference and video calling.

RFA plans to use the Mega Emotion Sounds Player feature to include sound bytes into live news reports. The overall voice quality can provide even better quality than standard phone lines.

Higher quality interviews, lower calling costs, ease-of-use and more effective internal support and communications are all reasons that made it easy for RFA to choose Skype.
