I'm certainly not buying any SMTK if that's what you are getting at Mr. Caruthers. I was just noting that FRAM has competition in the meter business from both old and new IP.

The utility industry is old but it is not well organized as far as its equipment/raw materials supply chains are concerned. Their suppliers treat them like fat turkeys ready for plucking and some of the systems they are being sold are just this side of garbage.

They have nothing close to the automotive industry's AEC that I can tell and AMR designs are all over the map in so far as cost/performance and capability specifications are concerned. Every individual utility is making up their own set of specs and letting bids as they go even within the same regulatory jurisdiction you get different utilities setting up different systems.

Moreover I'd be very much surprised if every AMR meter supplier, particularly in places like India and China always sets up a system using the same parts and equipment on which they relied to win their contracts. I see no reason to believe the level of corruption in this market will be any less than it is on Wall Street or anywhere else. In any case it looks just like the under performing, over sold, standard-less, RFID market "expectations"... with the "big boom" of ubiquity always just over the next hill.

It smells like Wild Wild West v8.01 as best I can tell and I suspect that SMTK is not the only company with less "uptake" in the AMR market than it had "hoped."

I'm just glad we got the showcase in Italy's AMR installation early on. That plus the smartcard apps and the air bag/event data recorder proof of concepts in the auto market should assure F-RAM's seat at the table of low density NV memory for years to come...

And we don't even have the 2-4Mb serial devices in volume yet.
