Thompson has decided to take his campaign and virtually all of its resources to Iowa in an all-or-nothing attempt to register a strong showing in the caucuses here on January 3.

Several weeks ago the pollster Peter Hart did a focus group in Richmond, VA with a dozen undecided Republican voters. C-SPAN filmed it. Some people were for Giuliani, some for Romney, one for McCain I think - not one for Thompson. At the end of the session Hart asked them to write down the name of a candidate who they could vote for if their first choice wasn't available. Nearly all of them had written down "Thompson". So maybe there will be some surprising compromise support for Thompson in the Iowa caucuses. If not, sounds like he's out.
