Not really, but I do admit your take wasn't as far out as I was expecting. So, I do retract that remark.

I approve of the way that Bush I handled the economy. His mistake was to try to happy talk about the economy. Which made people feel he was out of touch. It likely was why the supermarket scanner remark got as much traction as it did.

His failure wasn't one of action. His failure was one of leadership. To grandly wave your hand and pronounce that it is better to ignore the situation was the wrong thing to do. Instead, he should have made some speeches about how he was concerned about the situation and was monitoring things to try and see if some form of intervention was needed would have been a lot smarter.

When people are worried, it isn't smart just to blow them off. It is smart to take their worries seriously.

Which is what Clinton was saying. He told America he was taking their concerns seriously, unlike his opponent.

And that is an important component of leadership.
