Perhaps you could explain what's so offensive about it. It's not obvious to me.

Personal anecdote. As you may recall, I was recently away from home for some months causing me to miss my quarterly dental care. Before I left, I asked both my dentist and periodontist for suggestions about how to go about getting it in a city where I was a visitor. One of them suggested that I use the dental school. Had I been gone as long as I originally expected, I would have done so. I think it would have been interesting and I would have been providing a training service. It never occurred to me to be offended at the suggestion that I do so.
