In this particular story, does he illuminate the motivation of our candidates?

This is not the normal Patterson "Legal Thriller." He makes the struggle in the Party between what I refer to as an "Eagle" candidate, a secular conservative such as McCain/Giuliani, and the Social Conservatives, such as Huckabee/Romney.

He uses the 1990 South Carolina Primary battle between Bush/McCain as a frame for dramatizing it. Gives you a lot of nitty-gritty of campaigning.

It's more "black/white" than real life, but a good story.
