Z, > What sort of security? If you're talking about terrorism, all of the 9/11 hijackers were here legally... and besides, that's just not nearly the issue it's made out to be.

True, we're not going to keep out the determined terrorists, for they will always find a way in.

But there are plenty of gang members, convicts, smugglers, etc. who you really don't want to keep around. People whose only aim is to make trouble. People who have absolutely no respect for the law, given that they probably grew up in a lawless area. They will bring their problems to America and make life miserable for the vast majority of honest, hard-working residents, both native and foreign-born.

Those are the people you want to keep out.

The cost of all of the social "safety net" programs that you advocate will multiply with open immigration.

I don't believe in a welfare state, but there are still many services that I believe should remain open to the public, including fire and emergency room services. You have to get a handle on the number of people they serve, or else you'll never be able to pay for it all.

Remember what I said about California being a much more heavily taxed state than, say, Oregon or Washington? Part of the reason is due to all of the illegal immigration. Proof that more taxes does not buy you higher quality of public services.
