By that I mean something equivalent to the safety net provided all citizens of Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Norway, Iceland, etc.

OK, but that's not a "safety net." "Safety net" connotes something that protects against disaster. High wire acts use safety nets not to protect them from twisted shoulders or rope burns. Those are ordinary health issues. The safety net is to keep them from "going splat." What you're talking about is "free," comprehensive health care. Your symbolism is misleading.

What we have here are people insensitive to the plight of the 46 million people without health care insurance.

I don't think anyone is insensitive to their plight. I know that I'm certainly not. I just think that your answer is entirely the wrong answer, one that could be disastrous. "The world owes you a living" is not a healthy message for a successful American future no matter how hard it is to witness the bumps that may occur on the path to success. We can address those bumps without undermining our economic system.
