I think if they came out and started talking in the open about this, these folks would be persecuted like they were back in the old days.

Uh.. the persecution went both ways.. The mormons were very famous for persecuting those who did not agree with them (the Salt Sermon and Danite manifestor).. The enclave they set up in Missouri was essentially a dictatorship where mormons gathered to await the end of the world (which Joseph Smith predicted would occur in 1857, as I recall).. Thus, their mentality was that they were god's "chosen people" and that the rest of humanity were "gentiles" and they declared themselves a power unto themselves and not beholding to the governmental authority of the Governor. That is why Governor Boggs declared that the Mormons had declared war upon the Missouri government.

The "Danites", essentially religious secret police, for the purpose of terrorizing non-mormons as well as members who were opposing church leadership were formed in 1838, for the purpose of carrying out the LDS president's orders, without question and purging the church of "dissenters"..

And of course, later on Brigham Young declared himself Prophet, moved his followers to Utah, and tried to create a state within a state there.
