No one is telling anyone to banish religion. What people are saying is that religion is a private affair; not one involving the gov't.

But there are attempts to push even slight mentions of God or religion out of the public sphere.

Its probably a reaction to all the pushing of religion into the public sphere by evangelicals. For many people, religion is a personal thing. For evangelicals, its their whole life and they want everybody to celebrate with them even if they are not Christian. Its beyond me how they dare complain. We are a country that is approximately 76% but to see the XMAS displays all over the place you would think every last one of us is Christian. I was born Christian and really like the holiday but I take offense at having to listen to XMAS songs the day after Halloween.

What you consider a minor intrusion in the public domain others might think otherwise.
