He ran in Massachusetts as a can-do technocrat, and the subject of his religion never came up once. Nor did it ever arise while he was governor.

Bush was governor of Texas and his National Guard service never came up then either.. (at least not to any major degree.. ) Romney's religious views didn't matter so much in Massachusetts, IMO given that the state already was heavily in democratic hands and there wasn't a major evangelistic christian constituency to alienate for the purpose of weakening his reputation..

So please don't misunderstand me.. I'm sure he's probably a very fine candidate.. (as candidates go.. ;0)

All I'm saying is that running for president is a high stakes game... It's a no-holds barred contest in which some every political weapon available will be used in order to gain an advantage.

It will be interesting to see how Romney's campaign, and his church leadership, deflect any questions about their theology.
