I don't think the talk about Romney's religion is perplexing at all. An anti-religion bias is usually in the Dem talking points, with unflattering characterizations being made all the time. The left only seems to be tolerant of religion when its candidates are in black churches promising welfare and intoning like Southern Baptist preachers or when they are insisting that Islam is a religion of peace.

Here's the Maureen Dowd column that prompted Rambi to muse over her religious upbringing in the context of a discussion about the sado-masochist street fair in San Francisco being attended by children:
