Well its not just IOUs, real cash is transfered in exchange for an IOU.

It's not unaffordable

Perhaps its not utterly impossible to afford, but it is a major problem. The amount spent on entitlements already exceeds what we spend on defense and debt interest, and its going to go up more. Also comparisons of this sort are meaningless. If spending more on defense than social security (which isn't the case, but I'll imagine it is for a second) meant that social security was affordable, than by that logic spending more on defense would make social security more affordable, when the reality is it does just the opposite.
