Swiss drug maker sues Bethesda company for patent infringement
Friday December 14, 9:40 am ET

A Bethesda biotech is being sued by a Swiss company with offices in Frederick County and a plant in Baltimore.

Lonza Group AG filed a federal lawsuit Nov. 27 against Northwest Biotherapeutics Inc., alleging patent infringement. Northwest moved its headquarters from Bothell, Wash., to Bethesda last September.

Lonza, a maker of drugs and treatments, claims in court documents that Northwest, which develops drugs to treat cancer, is illegally using technology patented by Lonza.

In the suit filed in Greenbelt, Lonza claims that Medarex Inc., a New Jersey-based company licensed with the technology, sold it to Northwest without Lonza's knowledge or permission.

In a statement, Northwest (OTCBB:NWBO.OB - News) said it "disputes the allegations in the complaint, denies the claims of infringement" and "intends to vigorously defend against the action." Northwest could not be reached for comment.
