Sometimes though, all too often, people are simply unable to reason or understand.

Yes, but when we talk about scientists with advanced degrees we are probably talking about incredibly intelligent people, who, nevertheless, can only comprehend their own small area of knowledge, and depend on others for the wider view. Their faculties of reasoning are intact.

Politicians are another animal entirely. Their own agendas are driven by their appetites, power and control usually, the all too typical elaboration on sadism, especially sexual sadism. Politicians want the frisson that comes from subduing others.

Scientists are (speaking generally) misunderstood sad little geeks who just want to be loved, which makes them subjugate reason for acceptance.

It takes a very strong mind and ego to withstand scorn, even irrational scorn.
