The major customers in this case (auto and other manufacturers) are being driven out of business.

Specific companies might be driven out of business. Manufacturing in general in the US keeps growing.

Each company has its own reasons, so I'll focus on the big American auto companies where health care/insurance costs are a big part of the problem (although not all of it). The health care costs are a problem because of foolish decisions by the companies when they negotiated their union contracts, combined with the fact that they have to support many more retirees health care than current workers (which might be considered related to their foolish decision, but also is connected to the fact that the businesses faced competition that they didn't expect, and that competition 1 - Took some of their business, and 2 - Forced them to produce more per worker, both of which mean less workers per retiree.

If the justification for nationalized/socialized/single payer health care system is to bail out the car companies, than your subsidizing their mistakes at the expense of other companies and individuals who made better decisions.
